Tasting Notes
Vinous – 90
The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Village, which this year contains the measly amount of Les Evocelles harvested, has superb concentration on the nose with black cherries, bilberry and light oyster shell scents, all beautifully-defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and is very pure and concentrated, maybe just needing a little more mineralité to come through on the finish. Give this 3-4 years in bottle.

(Outstanding) Here the beautifully layered nose combines notes of black cherry liqueur with hints of earth, game, underbrush and humus. There is once again excellent energy and precision to the sleek and delicious medium weight flavors that possess a seductive texture before terminating in an impressively persistent and well-balanced finale. Villages-level wines rarely are as good as this and it’s one to buy if you can find it.
Jasper Morris – 90-93
There was virtually no fruit in the Evocelles vineyard, so it has not been made separately this year. Jet black centre with purple rim. Rich but not cooked. At first, I found it hard to climb inside this wine. Then came an explosion of dark red and black fruit with a light pepperiness behind, long and fine with excellent energy.

The old vine Gevrey villages bottling is truly exceptional in 2020 from Monsieur Bachelet. The bouquet is simply fabulous already, soaring from the glass in a blaze of black cherries, sweet dark berries, grilled meats, dark chocolate, woodsmoke, black minerality, a touch of new oak and an exotic topnote of anise. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and gorgeously sappy at the core, with a seamless structure, great soil signature, ripe, fine-grained tannins and a long, tangy and perfectly balanced finish. Stunning juice for an old vine villages bottling!
