Tasting Notes
JancisRobinson.com – 18
Cask sample. Paler crimson than the supposedly lesser wines from this address. Heady and more immediately appealing than them too. Really snazzy and gorgeous with breadth, sweetness and a suggestion of dunked digestive biscuits. Beautifully polished tannins. And real energy as well as all that sweetness. The fruit almost subsumes all the fine tannin.
Anticipated maturity: 2025-2045
Robert Parker – 97
Unwinding in the glass with a complex bouquet of peonies, wild berries, rose petals, orange rind, exotic spices and sweet soil tones, the 2019 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with huge concentrated, beautifully ripe tannins and lively balancing acids. Powerful and resonant, this vintage stands out for its sheer plenitude and structural finesse; and while it will reward patience, I suspect that it will never truly shut down, something that’s rare for this benchmark rendition of the Clos Vougeot.
Anticipated maturity: 2029-2067

The grapes come from an old vine parcel purchased by Dr. Mugneret in 1953, just underneath the château. There is a bit of whole cluster in the fermentation and 70% new casks. The low-yielding vines were picked very ripe to make a super-concentrated and magnificently dense wine, with abundant fruit and lots of structure. This was the star of the vintage for me from Mugneret-Gibourg. It will repay a bit of ageing and should continue to improve for decades.
Jasper Morris – 95-98
Old vines from 1954 have yielded 39 hl/ha giving 14.4% alcohol. Always consistent production I this vineyard, I am told. Noble imperial purple colour, with a superb bouquet also displaying this aspect of nobility. The fruit absolutely fills the mouth, a little bit of blood orange alongside rich ripe cherries, this Clos Vougeot can carry the alcohol without a problem. One or two chocolate notes, but they add complexity to what is predominantly red fruit. Very successful in 2019.
Burghound – 94
Here too discreet wood sets off earthier and less spicy aromas of various dark berries along with a mentholated top note. The rich and caressing yet quite powerful and muscular big-bodied flavors possess a velvety mid-palate texture that contrasts somewhat with the austere and mildly warm finale. This wine always ages extremely well and 2019 should continue that excellent track record.
