Tasting Notes
JancisRobinson.com – 17/20
On calcaire de Premeaux . Still in barrel, four out of six barrels new. Oak origins ” Vosges and Allier from Francois Freres. Vosges brings tension, and they have slightly reduced the new oak ” easier to do when you have bigger volumes. Barrel sample. Mid cherry red. Smells richer, deeper and riper on the nose than the Clos d’Eugenie, generous dark-red fruit. You hardly see the oak the fruit is so alive. Ripe and rounded on the palate, incredibly gentle and caressing but has depth and fullness in the mouth. Again that delicate slightly floral touch in the fruit, so fragrant and approachable. On the finish, there’s a touch more savoury character, a little more spice, more grounded and less flirtations. Incredibly long and pure. (JH)

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru is matured with 60% whole clusters. It has a clean, precise bouquet of black cherry, bilberry, minerals and a touch of pressed iris, much better than the two Village Crus from d’Eugénie. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit, a fine bead of acidity, gentle grip and a slight lactic note toward the finish. It is not a deep or powerful Aux Brûlées but it feels persistent and has a silky-smooth texture. Give it four to six years in bottle.

There’s been a welcome shift in style in this wine in 2017, away from deep colour and extraction towards something that’s more, well, Burgundian. Made with 60% whole bunches in 66% new wood, it comes from a 0.6ha parcel. Spicy, textured and aromatic, it has notes of orange zest, plush red fruits, good acidity and the tannic structure to age.

(Outstanding) An attractively fresh nose offers up notes of ripe red currant, raspberry, dark pinot fruit and pretty spice wisps. There is equally good freshness to the relatively concentrated medium weight flavors that exude a fine bead of minerality on the focused, powerful and saline finish that is youthfully austere. This should be very good in time as the underlying material appears to be excellent.
Jasper Morris – 96
Good depth of purple colour, nose slightly lacks purity, might be some stems. This builds notably with more intensity, drier finish (stems again) but what a concentration of fruit. The acidity is just right, beautifully poised, a little exposure to air and this has become a beautiful wine.
