Tasting Notes
Vinous – 92-94
Dark red cherry, plum, cinnamon and new leather flesh out in the 2012 Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Chaignots. A round, plush wine, the 2012 boasts stunning depth, pliancy and richness, all supported by cool veins of minerality. The pure depth of the fruit suggests the 2012 will drink well relatively early, but there is more than enough energy to support many years in the cellar.
Anticipated maturity: 2018-2032

Tasted blind. Bright, deep blackish garnet. Particularly savoury nose. Sturdy and confident with a convincing blend of ripe, expressive fruit, well managed tannins and enough acidity. Long and brisk.
Anticipated maturity: 2020-2032

Tasted blind at the annual “Burgfest” tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots from Mugneret-Gibourg has an upfront, modern bouquet with plenty of lavish dark cherry, red plum fruit layered with new oak, though some assiduous winemaking means that it has maintained its terroir expression and delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe tannins and well-judged acidity. The sumptuous aspect of this wine suggests more Vosne-Romanée than Nuits-Saint Georges, its satin-like texture irresistible on the finish. I suspected this to be Mugneret-Gibourg and so it turned out. It’s one of those bottles you’ll finish to the very last drop.
Anticipated maturity: 2017-2035

(Outstanding) Here the expressive nose is even spicier than that of the Vignerondes with hints of Asian-style spices, sandalwood and a layered mix of both red and black pinot fruit, all of which is trimmed in just enough oak to notice. There is excellent delineation to the medium-bodied flavors that also possess remarkably fine-grained tannins that add to the sense of refinement on the seductive but vibrant finish. I very much like this as it seamlessly combines the spiciness of Vosne with the sleek muscularity of the northern part of Nuits though in contrast to the 2013 version I would describe this moderately robust effort as being more Nuits than Vosne.
