Soldera Case Basse
For those familiar with Italian wine, Soldera Case Basse is a well-known name. This small family-run winery, located in Tuscany, has gained recognition for its limited range of wines made exclusively from Sangiovese grapes. What sets Soldera Case Basse apart is their dedication to minimal intervention techniques, such as a ban on chemical fertilizers and the use of natural yeasts in the cellar. The vineyard practices modern techniques for yield restriction, while the cellar uses traditional methods for fermentation and aging.
In 2012, the vineyard faced a major setback when five years’ worth of Soldera production (2007-2011) was almost entirely destroyed by a former employee. The individual, Andrea Di Gisi, was sentenced to four years in prison. Following the tragedy, the winery has labelled its products as Toscana IGT/IGP Soldera Case Basse 100% Sangiovese since 2013 (with the 2006 wine).
Vintage 2017 – Tasting note by Janice Robinson MW
JR 17+ Just 11,000 bottles produced (15,000–17,000 is typical). Very fresh nose and marked acidity on the palate. Lovely fragrance but it needs a bit of time for that youthful acidity to subside and the fruit to assert itself. Impressively long but not ready yet. [Tasted: 09/06/2022]
